Now, the Mandukya Upanishad.



ॐ । ओमित्येतदक्षरमिदं सर्वं तस्योपव्याख्यनं
भूतं भवद् भविष्यदिति सर्वमोंकार एव ।
यच्चान्यत्त्रिकालातीतं तदप्योंकार एव ॥ १ ॥

Verse 1
Oṃ! Aum-Ityetad-Akṣaram-Idaṃ Sarvaṃ Tasyopavyākhyānaṃ
Bhūtaṃ Bhavad-Bhaviṣyad-Iti Sarvam-Oṃkāra Eva.
Yac-Cānyat-Trikālātītaṃ Tad-Apy-Oṃkāra Eva.

Oṃ! All this is this imperishable Aum. Its explanation as follows: the past, the present, the future: all of this is Oṃkāra (the Eternal). And what is other than the threefold division of time, that is also Oṃkāra (the Eternal).

Verse 2
Sarvaṃ Hy-Etad-Brahma.
Ayam-Ātmā Brahma.
So’yam-Ātmā Catuṣpāt.

Verily, all this is the Absolute. This Self is the Absolute. This same Self has four quarters.

Verse 3
Jāgarita-Sthāno Bahiṣ-Prajñaḥ.
Saptāṅga Ekonaviṃśati-Mukhaḥ
Sthūla-Bhug-Vaiśvānaraḥ Prathamaḥ Pādaḥ.

In the waking state, consciousness is outward. Seven-limbed, nineteen-mouthed, enjoyer of material objects—Vaiśvānara (the Self of the waking state) is the first quarter.

जागरितस्थान – Jāgarita-Sthāna – the waking state
बहिष्प्रज्ञः – Bahiṣ-Prajñaḥ – consciousness is outward

Verse 4
Svapna-Sthāno’ntaḥ-Prajñaḥ
Saptāṅga Ekonaviṃśati-Mukhaḥ
Pravivikta-Bhuk-Taijaso Dvitīya Pādaḥ.

In the state of dream, consciousness is inward. Seven-limbed, nineteen-mouthed, enjoyer of subtle objects—Taijasa (the Self of the dream state) is the second quarter.

स्वप्नस्थान – Svapna-Sthāna – the dream state
अन्तःप्रज्ञः – Antaḥ-Prajñaḥ – consciousness is inward

यत्र सुप्तो न कंचन कामं कामयते
न कंचन स्वप्नं पश्यति तत्सुषुप्तम् ।
सुषुप्तस्थान एकीभूतः प्रज्ञानघन एवाऽऽनन्दमयो
ह्यानन्दभुक् चेतोमुखः प्राज्ञस्तृतीयः पादः ॥ ५ ॥

Verse 5
Yatra Supto Na Kaṃcana Kāmaṃ Kāmayate
Na Kaṃcana Svapnaṃ Paśyati Tat-Suṣuptam.
Suṣupta-Sthāna Ekī-Bhūtaḥ Prajñāna-Ghana Evā’nanda-Mayo
Hy-Ānanda-Bhuk Ceto-Mukhaḥ Prājñas-Tṛtīyaḥ Pādaḥ.

Where one asleep neither desires anything nor sees any dream—that is deep sleep. In the state of deep sleep experience is unified, a mass of consciousness, verily of the form of bliss, verily enjoying bliss, and whose mouth is consciousness—Prājña (wisdom/the Self of the sleep state) is the third quarter.

एष सर्वेश्वर एष सर्वज्ञ एषोऽन्तर्याम्येष
योनिः सर्वस्य प्रभवाप्ययौ हि भूतानाम् ॥ ६ ॥

Verse 6
Eṣa Sarveśvaraḥ Eṣa Sarvajña Eṣo’ntaryāmi-Eṣa
Yoniḥ Sarvasya Prabhavāpyayau Hi Bhūtānām.

The Lord of All; the All-knowing; the Inner Guide; the Womb of All; verily, the cause and dissolution of all beings.

अदृष्यव्यवहार्यमग्राह्यमलक्षणमचिन्त्यमव्यपदेश्यमेकात्मप्रत्ययसारं
प्रपञ्चोपशमं शान्तं शिवमद्वैतं चतुर्थं मन्यन्ते स आत्मा स विज्ञेयः ॥ ७ ॥

Verse 7
Nāntaḥ-Prajñaṃ, Na Bahiṣ Prajñaṃ, Nobhayataḥ-Prajñaṃ, Na Prajñā-Ghanaṃ, Na Prajñaṃ, Nāprajñam.
Adṛṣya-Avyavahāryam-Agrāhyam-Alakṣaṇam-Acintyam-Avyapadeśyam Ekātma-Pratyaya-Sāraṃ Prapañcopaśamaṃ Śāntaṃ Śivam-Advaitaṃ Caturthaṃ Manyante Sa Ātmā Sa Vijñeyaḥ.

Not consciousness inward, not consciousness outward, not consciousness of both, not a mass of consciousness, not consciousness, and not unconsciousness. Turīya (the fourth) is considered as invisible, unrelated, ungraspable, indefinable, inconceivable, ineffable, the Essence of the consciousness of Selfhood and Oneness, the negation of all relative existence, peaceful, auspicious, and non-dual; that is the Self; that is to be realized.

नान्तः प्रज्ञं – Nāntaḥ-Prajñaṃ – not consciousness inward

सोऽयमात्माऽध्यक्षरमोङकारोऽधिमात्रं पादा मात्रा
मात्राश्च पादा अकार उकारो मकार इति ॥ ८ ॥

Verse 8
So’yam Ātmā’dhyakṣaram-Oṅkaro’dhimātraṃ Pādā Mātrā
Mātrāś-Ca Pādā Akāra Ukāro Makāra Iti.

This same Self, above all syllables, is the syllable Aum; the quarters identical with the measures and the measures identical with the quarters—thus, A, U, M.

जगरितस्थानो वैश्वानरोऽकारः प्रथमा
मात्राऽऽप्तेरादिमत्त्वाद् वाऽऽप्नोति ह वै
सर्वान्कामानादिश्च भवति य एवं वेद ॥ ९ ॥

Verse 9
Jāgarita-Sthāno Vaiśvānaro’kāraḥ Prathamā
Mātrā’pter Ādimatvād-Vāpnoti Ha Vai
Sarvān-Kāmān-Ādiś-Ca Bhavati Ya Evaṃ Veda.

In the waking state, Vaiśvānara is A, the first measure because it is all-pervading or because it is the first. Verily, he who knows thus attains all desires and becomes the first.

नास्याब्रह्मवित्कुले भवति य एवं वेद ॥ १० ॥

Verse 10
Svapna-Sthānas-Taijasa Ukāro Dvitīyā Mātrotkarṣāt
Ubhayatvādvotkarṣati Ha Vai Jñāna-Santatiṃ Samānaś-Ca Bhavati
Nāsyā-Brahma-Vit-Kule Bhavati Ya Evaṃ Veda.

In the dream state, Taijasa is U, the second measure, because it is superior or because it is in between. Verily, he who knows thus increases the flow of knowledge and becomes equalized; no person ignorant of Brahman is born in his family.

Verse 11
Suṣupta-Sthānaḥ Prājño Makāras-Tṛtīya Mātrā Miter-Apīter-Vā
Minoti Ha Vā Idaṃ Sarvam-Apītiś-Ca Bhavati Ya Evaṃ Veda.

In the state of deep sleep, Prājña is M, the third measure, because it is the measure or the last. Verily, he who knows thus measures and becomes the support of all this.

Verse 12
Amātraś-Caturtho’vyavahāryaḥ Prapañcopaśamaḥ Śivo’dvaita
Evam-Oṅkāra Ātmaiva Saṃviśaty-Ātmanā’tmānaṃ Ya Evaṃ Veda.

Turīya (the Fourth) is without measure, unrelated, the negation of all relative existence, auspicious, and non-dual. Thus, Oṃkāra (the Eternal) is verily the Self. He who knows thus by the Self enters the Self.
